This time of year is full of gatherings and celebrations that represent traditions, customs and cultural richness. It is the perfect time to learn more about our family from generations past, learn about other cultures and experience new traditions.
This month, Author Sandra Wilson and illustrator Jayson Tench are launching a new book in the Gnomes of the Round Mushroom series. This book introduces Erratic, a gnome from Stone Mountain who chose to leave his unhappy life in the mountain and find a happier place to live.
A stranger has arrived in the wooded realm and the gnomes want to welcome him with a special celebration!
This book offers a story that shows how different traditions and celebrations can be joined together to create a new celebration. It has the Gnomes of the Wooded Realm opening their homes and hearts to a new gnome, one from Stone Mountain that has left there to find a better place to live.
It can inspire conversation about immigrants, refugees, customs, traditions and more!
I really love how diverse the world is and am truly honoured when I am invited to share someone's holiday or tradition. I am grateful to be included, either in greeting or as a guest, and enjoy learning about different foods, music, traditions and customs that accompany these gatherings. I have also been encouraged to bring a few of my own traditions along!
In the story Welcome Gnome, each gnome brings something to the table for this new celebration - lights, food, cake, flowers and more. What would you bring to the table?
My re-imagined classic, The Gingerbread House, also includes a story about tradition. This story was inspired by the classic of Hansel and Gretel but is a completely different story. It is a rhyming tale about traditions and friendship, a perfect holiday story that encourages us to celebrate each other, all year long.
Visit the Kindness Kangaroo Library to hear The Gingerbread House story.
This story introduces the tradition of holiday baking - do you do special baking during the holidays?
We love to share the joy of reading and the love of books, so if you know of a book that focuses on family gatherings and traditions share it here, maybe I can feature it in the Kindness Kangaroo Library!
