Kitchener author Sandra Wilson visited a grade 2 class in Woodstock, Ontario to work on the second book in the Emotional Animal Alphabet series. As part of the Kindness Kangaroo Project Sandra is visiting classrooms throughout Southern Ontario to listen to children’s’ ideas and use them and their drawings in each book. For Empathy Elephant Sandra visited Eastdale Public School to talk to the Grade 2 class about empathy. The students offered ideas on how to react to different situations, how to offer help to friends experiencing emotions of sadness or anger and how understanding what people feel can help us learn how to respond in certain scenarios.
Sandra used the students’ ideas to write the story then sent it back to the class for illustrations. Before long Sandra picked up 21 wonderful elephant illustrations including a cover drawing from 7 year-old Kayden, the student that brought the author into his class. With the help of publisher Saplings, and several family and business sponsors, the Empathy Elephant book was off to the printers.
The first copy of the book was gifted to young Kayden and the two have made plans to sign copies at the upcoming book launch on the school grounds on July 28th.
